This is what it looks like when you carefully schedule a three-day juice cleanse, and at the last minute your boss calls for a working lunch on the day you’re supposed to start not eating:
Like most people, between work and social obligations, it’s hard to clear my calendar for three days of no food. But with a refrigerator full of juice and no window to spare, I packed my juice and headed for the office. While everyone around me at the meeting was munching on sandwiches and salad, there I was, sipping. And except for some potato chip envy, it was better than okay - the juice (strawberry, beet and apple, in case you’re wondering) was way more delicious than something so … organic has any right to be.
Some people are responsible, even passionate, about healthy living. Others, like me, not so much. But right now, it’s more important than ever to do everything we can to take good care of ourselves.
Every day it seems we wake up to the kind of alarming news that makes me, for one, want to crawl back under the covers. In fact, there's a syndrome dubbed “Post-Election Stress Disorder” by some mental health professionals, who’ve been reporting an unprecedented number of patients on both sides of the aisle suffering anxiety and depression related to current events. Count me in on that. Like many, I’ve become addicted to cable news - even though it’s usually so upsetting I have to watch an episode of Mary Tyler Moore (one of the old ones, before Rhoda left) to recover.
To cope with stressors, it's been advised that we take control of our environment - easier said than done when the people you're worrying about are Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong-un. It's also suggested we not keep our feelings bottled up, but take that too far and you find yourself unfriended on Facebook.
Fortunately, managing stress can also be as simple as sleeping well, exercising and sticking to a healthy diet. And since healthy eating is one thing most of us have control over, and antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables "soothe us without sapping our energy," for me, a juice cleanse is a good place to start.
I've gotten some emails asking for info on the Living juices - details are here: http://bit.ly/2nqRRco
